What are the major highlights of Chomolhari Trek?
There are many highlights that makes Chomolhari Trek one of the best treks in Bhutan. The sightseeing tour in Paro is an overwhelming experience where you can visit some artistic monasteries, temples, dzongs and old museums. Tiger’s nest monastery is one of the not to be missed sites in Paro. The walk along a scenic route all the way from Paro valley to Chomolhari base camp is rejoicing. It offers an opportunity to traverse through some diversified geographical terrain like dense alpine forests, meadows, hills, lakes, etc. You can climb up to Nyelala pass that offers some incredible views of Mt. Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Khang. Last but not the least, Thimpu city is also a treasure of various religious, cultural and historical sites. You can enjoy a full day sightseeing this city.
How long does it take to accomplish Chomolhari Trek and how does the route go?
Chomolhari Trek starts with a flight above the Himalayas to Paro. A wonderful sightseeing tour in Paro and you will be drive to Drugyal dzong which is the commencement point of the trek. You walk pass the Paro valley and traverse through alpine forests, meadows and charming villages in between. You pass Shana, Soi Thangthangkha and Jangothang to Chomolhari Base Camp. From the base camp, you climb up to a pass for some astonishing views of mountains like Mt. Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tshrim Khang and other neighboring peaks. From here you descend down to Lingshi valley and walk down to Thimpu. In Thimpu, you can enjoy a day sightseeing around some important places in the city. in this way, your trek concludes with a flight back to your home country.

Our airport representative will be waiting for you outside the airport. Upon your arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. Check in the hotel and relax. Rest of the time is on your own. Enjoy your time at the hotel. In the evening, your guide will meet you at the hotel and brief you about the plans ahead. Stay at the hotel for the night. (Breakfast included)
Your day starts with a breakfast at the hotel. Then your guide will pick you up and take you for sightseeing around Kathmandu valley. Today, you will be taken to the UNESCO listed heritage sites in Kathmandu. At first, we shall visit Kathmandu Durbar Square. It is a beautiful palace in the center of Kathmandu. Built in medieval period during Malla reign, it is a huge complex that comprises of palace turned into museum, courtyards and temples. It is a fine piece of wooden crafts, metal crafts and stone crafts. After exploring this complex, we head towards Swayambhunath, a stupa placed in a hill top. The stupa is followed by a visit to an old temple of Lord Shiva – Pashupatinath temple. This temple holds high significance amongst Hindu pilgrims. Finally, the sightseeing tour ends with a visit to Boudhanath stupa, a large stupa placed upon three layered mandela. You will be dropped at the hotel for the night. (Breakfast and dinner included)
Today, you will be transferred to the international terminal of Kathmandu airport for a flight to Paro, Bhutan. The flight to Paro is an amazing experience as you will get some mind-blowing views of mountains that include the highest peak of the world – Mt. Everest. Upon your arrival in Paro International airport, you will meet our Bhutanese crew members. They will pick you up from the airport and drop you at your hotel in Bhutan. You can check in and freshen up for a while. Then after lunch, you will be driven around the Paro city for a sightseeing tour. You can visit Ta Dzong museum, Paro Rinpung Dzong and Kichu Lhakhang today. In the evening, you can explore the streets of Paro. Overnight at your hotel in Paro (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Fuel up yourself with a delicious breakfast in hotel. Then we prepare for a hike up to Tiger’s Nest monastery. Also known as Takshang monastery, it is a famous monastery in Bhutan known for its dramatic location and religious value. Lying at an elevation of 3100 meters on a top of a hill, it is said to be the same place where Guru Rinpoche had flown on the back of tigress in 8th century to meditate in the cave. The cave is the same place where the monastery stands now. The monastery sits on the edge of a steep cliff that lies around 900 meteres above the valley of Paro. After exploring the monastery we drop back to Paro and stay at the hotel for the night (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Today, we start our trekking journey. After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to Drugyal dzong from where we start walking downhill along a wide and well marked trail. Gradually, the trail climbs up along the fields of rice and millet to the apple orchards. Soon we will find ourselves walking through a forested area. No sooner, the valley widens and we reach an army post in Gunitsawa. At this point we are at an elevation of 2810 meters. Further, we walk towards Shana at 2850 meters. There are many good options for camping in the meadows of Shana. We set up our camps and stay here for the night (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Leaving Shana, we follow a trail along the Paro River that undulates up and down through the forests of oak, pine and spruce. After some time of walk, we cross a bridge over a river and follow the river for a while. We climb up through the forests of rhododendron and cross a bridge again. We continue ascending up until we reach Siothangthangkha at an elevation of 3750 meters. Here, we set up our camps and stay for the night (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
From Siothangthangkha, we climb up until we come across an army camp. From the camp, we follow a river and walk above the tree line with astonishing views of peaks on sight. We continue our walk across the meadows and final ascend up the valley will bring us at Jangothang. At Jangothang, we will already be at an elevation of 4050 meters. Here, we set up our camps amidst the views of Mt. Jumolhari and Jichu Drake and enjoy our night stay with inspiring views of mountains (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Today is a free day and you have four options for hiking – first is 3-4 hours hike up to a ridge that offers some inspiring views if Jichu Drake, second you can hike to the end of valley towards Jumolhari Base Camp, third you can trek up to Jichu Drake or you can hike to Tsophu, it’s a pair of lake that is rich with brown trout. We mostly recommend you to hike to Jumolhari Base Camp as it offers some fantastic views of Mt. Jumolhari and Jichu Drake with other neighboring peaks. We return back to Jangothang for the night (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
We follow a trail along a stream and cross a bridge to get to the right side of the stream. Then we ascend up the first ridge that offers some heart whelming views of Jumilhari, Jichu Drake and Tsherim gang. Then we open up to a valley that goes flat and wide. Further, we climb up Ngye La pass at an elevation of 4830 meters. As we cross the pass, we descend down to Lingshi enjoying some close up mountain views. We even visit a dzong in Lingshi. Tonight, we et up our camps in Lingshi for overnight stay (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
The trail climbs up towards a choten placed on a ridge above the campsite. Then the trail turns south and climbs up deep into the Mo Chhu valley. We continue walking on the Westside of treeless valley. We cross a river on the path and climb up steep to Yeli La pass at an elevation of 4820 meters. On a clear day, we can see some sparkling views of Jumilhari, Gangchen, Tashering Gang and Masang Gang from the pass. From the pass, we descend down steep to the camping site in Shodu (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
From Shodu, we walk for a while and follow a trail along the Thimpu river that descends down through the forests of juniper, rhododendron and oak. On the way, we will be able to see the view of a cliff facing the rock and waterfalls. It’s an amazing view to please your eyes with. Further, the trail ascends to the ruins of riverside. We further ascend up to ruins of Barshong dzong and continue walking until we reach our camp at an altitude of 3600 meters in Barshong (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Today, we descend down gently along the dense forests of rhododendron, birch, junipers, and conifers. We continue descending until we come cross the Thimpu river. We gently climb over the ridges and descend down along the stream. Finally, we traverse steep to a cliff at Dolam Kencho. We open up to a vast pastureland where we set up our camps for the night (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
The trail traverses in and out and steeply to a river and follow a trail southwards that leads us to Dodena at an elevation of 2640 meters. Here, a vehicle will be waiting for us. We hop into the ride that will drive us to Thimpu city. In the afternoon, we can spend our time exploring the Thimpu city, people and their lifestyle. Overnight at a hotel in Thimpu (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included).
Finally, after a successful accomplishment of Chomolhari Trek, you will be driven to Paro International airport to catch a return flight back to your home destination (Breakfast included).
