During the process poison was generated that could destroy the world.  Lord Shiva, the great one drank the poison to save the world from poison. He couldn’t bear the pain of burn hence struck his trident in the mountain to drink water in order to reduce the burning sensation. Therefore, the lake was formed from the water from mountain which is now known as Gosaikunda lake.
